In the center of the black-and-white photo, C.F. Ramuz and Maurice Zermatten are seated on a stone step, their fingers interlaced on their knees. Zermatten is looking at Ramuz, who is looking at the lens. They are surrounded by trees and plants.

I think worry tortured him all his life. All kinds of worries, material, moral, spiritual, and they had ended up furrowing his face just as rain erodes the hardest rocks, as oxide eats away at metals. No doubt, the published pages of the Diary shed some light on this inner life. I still believe that this modest, Protestant Vaudois was careful not to let us in on all his secrets.
